The Markeys featuring Georgie Morton - Hot Rod (1958)
The Markeys:
Georgie Morton aka Shadow Morton, Marty Monaco (Joseph Monaco's brother), Tony Giannattasio aka Tony Michaels
Written by Shadow Morton and Joseph Monaco
Debut single released in the summer of 1958
"Teenaged George Morton started running with a gang called the Red Devils, led by a character named “Bumpy.” He also started singing with a doo-wop group made up of Marty Monaco, Tony Giannatasio, Sal DiTroia, and Victor Eusepi. Monaco’s mother had a recording studio. The boys spent all of their free time experimenting, and in the summer of 1958, they were offered the opportunity by a local producer to record two songs in the RCA Records Studio in New York City. They released “Hot Rod” and “Yakkity Yak.” When you listen to “Hot Rod,” it’s not as realized as his later successes, but you can hear the direction he’s headed in. Sound effects are created vocally, and he’s painting a picture with words." (5 Songs You Didn’t Know Were Written by ’60s Girl-Group Guru Shadow Morton BY JAY MCDOWELL)
Oh well tonight I have a date
and I know I won't be late
for its with my girlie love
and she's my only love
Oh baby, oh little baby why'd you go and make me cry
Oh my my honey we're going for a ride
(Comin' to getcha baby Comin' to getcha)
Oh well I grabbed her by the hand
and out the door we ran
in my car we hopped
and then I had to stop and say
Baby, oh little baby why'd you go and make me cry
Oh my my honey we're going for a ride
Oh well I turned my motor over
threw it into first
up on the clutch
down on the gas
Oh baby, oh little baby why'd you go and make me cry
Oh my my honey we're going for a ride
(beep beep get out of the way)
Oh well I knew from the start that we would part
But I never feared the time was near
Even when she looked at me
My poor poor heart, it couldn't see
Oh well I threw it in second
up on the clutch
fed her some petroleum
Oh baby, oh little baby why'd you go and make me cry
Oh my my honey we're going for a ride
She looked at me with those big big eyes
And says honey I have a sad surprise
Our romance, it is through
(Screeching tire noise)
Out with you!
And now I ride all night til the dawn's early light
For my mind is crazy and my eyes are hazy
Til my wheels burn out and my motor's dead
I got a gal that I want to forget
Well now it's in third and I really really move
Doing 65, 75, 105
Man alive!
Baby, oh little baby why'd you go and make me cry
Oh my my honey we're going for a ride
So long honey, tonight I'll cry
Tonight I might even die
